Getting to Kangaroo Island is all part of the adventure—and it’s easier than you might think. Whether you prefer to travel by sea or air, the journey is comfortable, scenic and well serviced year-round.
By Ferry
The most popular way to reach Kangaroo Island is via the SeaLink ferry, which operates a relaxed 45-minute crossing from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw.
SeaLink runs two large vehicle and passenger ferries with multiple departures daily, offering up to 12 return services per day during peak periods. This makes it easy to bring your own car over, or simply travel as a foot passenger.
A few helpful tips for ferry travel:
- Book early. Ferry services can fill up quickly, especially during school holidays, long weekends and peak travel times.
- Book your ferry before your accommodation. This helps avoid disappointment if your preferred sailing is already at capacity.
- Allow flexibility if you can. Travelling on non-peak sailings or adding an extra night to your stay can make planning much easier.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to allow time for check-in and vehicle loading.
- Consider travel insurance. Ferry services can occasionally be disrupted due to weather or operational requirements.
- Check cancellation policies for both your ferry and accommodation bookings.
- If vehicle space is unavailable, car hire is available on the island and can be a great alternative.
Please note that SeaLink undertakes annual ferry maintenance, during which vessels may be temporarily removed from service. During these periods, deck space may be limited, so forward planning is especially important.

By Air
For a quicker option, Kangaroo Island is also accessible by air, with a 30-minute flight from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport.
Qantas offers flights to Kangaroo Island Airport, which can be booked through the Qantas network from anywhere in Australia or internationally. Passengers travelling by air are encouraged to arrive at Adelaide Airport at least 60 minutes prior to departure for check-in.
